Optional Events

Make your plans to bring your family to Seattle during SABR 36. While members attend the convention, your family will have many organized tours and trips to choose from. They will be open to both SABR family members and friends. These organized events will be offered not just before and after the convention, but also during. Your loved ones will not be left to fend for themselves and plan on their own, while you immerse yourself in baseball history. They’ll be with other SABR family members on pre-arranged tours, run by experts in the business, showcasing the best the Northwest has to offer.

Of course, we’ll also provide you with information and discounts on outings you may want to do on your own, from museum trips to the Space Needle.

We will offer tours from Monday June 26 through Sunday July 2, starting with a boat trip to Victoria, British Columbia and ending with a cruise to the San Juan Islands. Other tours include outings to Mt. Rainier and Mt. St. Helens. We will also have a SABR group departing from Seattle on a 7-day Alaska cruise Sunday afternoon July 2.

Some trips will be offered twice during the week, to offer flexibility. The exact schedule and pricing will be finalized in the next few weeks. At that time, there will be a link whereby you can sign up and pay for these trips since space may be limited. Prices will be surprisingly affordable and excellent values.

So the trip to SABR 36 in Seattle is not just for SABR members! It’s for your wife (or husband) and kids too. Don’t leave home without them! And you won’t feel guilty during the convention, because they’ll be having as good a time as you’ll be having. Plan to find your Emeralds in the Diamond City and surrounding areas.

Press Release (PDF)

It’s nearly 77 years late. But for local devotees of the national pastime, it’s never too late to tangibly express appreciation for the man universally considered the father of Pacific Northwest professional baseball.

The Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) will unveil a headstone for the late John S. Barnes on Wednesday, June 28, at Evergreen-Washelli Memorial Park and Funeral Home, 11111 Aurora Ave. N.

The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m., helping to kick off the SABR National Convention to be held June 28-July 1 at the Seattle Renaissance Hotel.

Barnes, a lifelong athlete, promoter and entertainer, achieved an astonishing feat in 1890. He established the region’s first pro-baseball circuit, the Pacific Northwest League by raising money to start teams in Spokane, Portland, Tacoma and Seattle in just one week’s time.

After Barnes, 74, died on Sept. 15, 1929, he was interred next to his wife at Evergreen-Washelli, where he has rested rather anonymously for nearly 77 years.

“John Barnes created the forerunners of the Mariners, Rainiers and scores of other professional baseball teams throughout the Northwest,” says Mike Rice, president of the Northwest chapter of SABR, “so we feel it is only fitting to honor him in a way that will survive for centuries to come.”
SABR, a non-profit organization, will accept donations to defray the cost of Barnes’ headstone through Aug. 31.

Checks payable to SABR should be inscribed “for the restricted use of erecting a headstone for John S. Barnes.”

Checks should be mailed to:

SABR,
Suite 719, 812 Huron Road,
Cleveland, OH 4
4115-1123.
